A Global Comparison of Art Basel

by Donald Eklund, Adair Jones, Mina Kim & Lena Patel (2016)

Abstract:

We have conducted a global comparison of the three sites of Art Basel, Basel, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong, to understand the similarities and differences of the sites, as well as some of the qualities that are responsible for the fairs’ success. We begin by studying relevant literature to give context to our research. In understanding the history of the fairs, along with their intentions and statements of purpose, we can compare this narrative to the reality our data shows. Our data is comprised of two databases and two qualitative analyses. Within these we observe qualities of the galleries that participated, such as their locations and dates of origin. Additionally, we look at the types of art work that this private institution has made available to the public to give a sense of what this fair intends their public image to be. This image is based off of trends in samples of sales data of various artworks. We also look at the three locations of the fairs, and the economic environments that uniquely effect each site. After completing this research, we determine that the narrative displayed to the public from spokespersons of Art Basel is parallel to the image the data depicts. Their emphasis on the inclusion of local art and culture is manifested as each fair hosts a larger portion of galleries that are local to their own site compared to the other fair locations. We also draw conclusions as to the image Art Basel paints for itself through their release of selected works, most of which are paintings. Furthermore, we conclude with various greater implications of our research; we hope that our findings may be used as a case study into some of the various factors and qualities that make a successful international modern and contemporary art fair.
